This workshop will focus on the major writing tasks required for college applications: the Common Application personal statement, the FOUR required UC essays, and supplemental writing for specific private schools. Years of work in counseling and teaching English have taught us that the writing process is different for every student and that one-on-one consultation yields great results. Therefore, our updated program will include a three day workshop and up to three scheduled one-on-one meetings with one of our teachers throughout the summer. These will be completed BEFORE the first day of school. In between the workshops and the one-on-one meetings, students will receive specific benchmarks that they will need to meet in order to promote progress towards a finished draft. This workshop does not count towards high school credit. (Registration closes June 1st).
The workshop sessions will include:
- A rich brainstorming process about your experiences, your passions, your dreams, and your values
- Discussion of the major essay prompts
- Writing time
- A personal organizational method that is time tested
- A “summer plan” – assignments and deadlines to meet throughout the summer
- Strategies for streamlining the process; you’ll use these essays in various ways to answer “extra” writing questions, such as specific college supplements or scholarship applications
Scheduled one-on-one meetings will include:
- Consultation with an SI faculty member – to review, respond to, revise, edit, proofread drafts of essays.
- Setting summer deadlines – Students will spend several hours working independently so that one-on-one sessions are as productive as possible.
- Completing several pieces of writing by the beginning of senior year!
