  2. Geometry Accelerated (In Person)
  3. Geometry Accelerated (Online/Hybrid)
  4. Geometry Accelerated (Independent Study)

Chemistry (In Person)

Dates: June 3 - July 12 (no class June 19 and July 4-5)
Time: 9:00 AM-3:00 PM
Final Exams: June 24 and July 12

Teacher(s): Mr. Matt Stecher (SI Faculty)

Chemistry is the scientific study of matter. This course aims to develop students as practicing laboratory scientists who can ask and answer questions of their own about what the world is made of and how and why chemical reactions occur. This course develops students’ conceptual and quantitative understanding of chemical principles. Units of study in this course include the nature of the atom, naming of chemicals and compounds, bonding, the periodic table, reactions and equilibrium, stoichiometry, the behavior of gases, acids, bases, and safe laboratory practices.

Geometry Accelerated (In Person, Online, or Independent)

This course follows generally the description of the traditional geometry course but also includes more proof (direct and indirect; in two-column, flow, and paragraph form). Within the context of Geometry, the Accelerated course includes more challenging algebraic applications, such as solving quadratic equations. It also includes an introduction to analytic geometry and trigonometry, helping to prepare students for Precalculus. A Texas Instruments TI-83 or TI-84 series graphing calculator is required.

Students will receive direct instruction, on Zoom. The course will typically have 2 to 3 direct instruction portions per class period. Duration of these will vary based on the topic being covered. There will be periods of independent work and/or group work in breakout rooms between the direct instruction.
The instructor will be available to meet with students via email and in Zoom meetings.
Homework is expected to submitted on before the beginning of the class period. Students come prepared with questions for discussion of difficulties with the homework.
Tests and quizzes will be administered online in a fixed time frame, and students will be expected to be on camera while they take the tests and quizzes. The final exams are required, in person, and proctored by the instructor.  You cannot pass the class without passing these exams.

   Independent Study

Dates: June 3-August 1
Final Exams: August 1, 9:00 AM
Enrollment Requirement: Completion of Algebra 2 Honors with an A or A-
Teacher(s): Mr. Paul Maychrowitz (SI Faculty)

Students will not receive any direct instruction, either on Zoom or in person, and are required to meet in person for the final exam.
All work is scheduled and fully independent. The instructor will be available via email for feedback on work and questions.
The instructor will have drop-in hours twice per week where students can join a Zoom meeting to ask questions or have issues clarified. Additionally, students can make appointments for additional help via Zoom – though due to the constraints of time, not every request for an additional meeting can be arranged. The instructor will make their best effort to accommodate student needs in this regard.
Tests and quizzes will be administered online in a fixed time frame, but they will not be monitored – students are expected to behave honestly and not cheat. While these tests and quizzes have ostensible due dates, those are pacing guidelines to help the students stay on track for the final.  They can officially be submitted any time before the final exam date.
The final exam is in-person and proctored by the instructor.  You cannot pass the class without passing these exams. It is 70% of the overall grade, and, as stated before, no matter what grade you have in the class before the final, you must pass the final to pass the class. The bulk of the grade will be determined by the in-person final exam – this is to mitigate the effect of cheating on the exams that are not monitored.
Homework is expected to be done and submitted, but it will not be graded for correctness. Solution guides to the homework will be posted for most of the assignments as an instructional aid.
The class will open on Monday, June 3, 2024, and all assignments are due July 31st at 11:59 pm.
The final exams (for both semesters) are on August 1st at 9 am.  It will be approximately 2 and a half hours and contain material from both semesters (effectively, it is a “Fall Final” and a “Spring Final” administered simultaneously).  This is the only date available for the final – if a student misses it for any reason, they cannot pass the course.

Prepare for Class

  • Attendance policy: Students may not miss more than 2 full days of school, or the equivalent of partial absences.
  • Final exams: Students in all courses MUST be present in person for final exams at SI. These are mandatory attendance days to take the assessments.
  • Supplies: Online students will receive a lab box or materials for the summer (pick-up at SI). Details on when you can pick up your lab box will be emailed out prior to June 3.

WAITLISTS: Should your preferred course sell out, please add your child to the waitlist by adding your preferred course to your cart, create a profile for your child, and then they will be added (please note, you will not receive an email confirmation). If a spot opens up, we will notify you via email and/or phone to complete registration. If you choose to enroll in an online course as you wait for an in-person spot to become available, it is imperative that you still add your child to that waitlist for the in-person course.
