ART & NATURE
6th to 8th Graders
Let’s explore how the “design” we observe in Nature can be an inspiration for our own original art pieces. By looking at the structure, colors, and textures of things found in the natural world, such as trees, plants, shells, and clouds. We will create drawings, paintings, and mixed media works. Paint, wood, metal, glass, wire and fabric are some of the elements we will use to create art pieces for you to take home.
FOLK ARTS AND CRAFTS FOR YOUNG STUDENTS
3rd to 5th Graders
Calling all budding artists and curious minds! This summer, embark on an adventure through the enchanting world of East Asian folk arts. This camp, led by SI’s own Leona Pappas, Mandarin Teacher, will help your child explore traditions, express creativity, and create lasting memories. Create unique crafts to bring home to share, field trips to the library, the park, and to the Japanese Tea Gardens, and gain appreciation for East Asian traditions and cultures. Some activities include: East Asian Calligraphy: Learn the art of beautiful brushwork and create your own masterpieces; Dumpling Wrapping; Songs and Music; Origami & Kite Making: Fold, design, and fly your imagination to new heights; Tea Traditions: Experience the elegance of tea ceremonies and discover their cultural meaning; Flower Arranging & Watercolor Painting: Combine nature and art in stunning ways; Poetry & Storytelling: Craft your own haiku and share stories inspired by your creations; Special Field Trip: Visit the serene Japanese Tea Gardens for inspiration and fun.
MAKE IT MOVE
6th to 8th Graders
You will join other students interested in designing and making 3D works that have elements of motion incorporated into the structure of your sculptures. How to make it stand, how to add movement and how to engage the viewer will be part of your job as an artist. A range of materials from wood, metal, wire, paper, glass, yarn, fabric, and paint will be used to create your original sculptures. You will make individual pieces to take home and a larger class project to display in the main hallway of the school.
PRINTMAKING
6th to 8th Graders
Let's explore PRINTING--by using found objects, you will create a variety of printed images. We will study artists like Andy Warhol, Hokusai, Ruth Asawa, John Buck, and others to show the way to a variety of styles of printmaking. This class is about specific skills in image making and design thinking, creative use of materials to create new and dramatic results. You will make individual projects to take home for your portfolio and work together to create a class project to hang in the halls at SI.
